Construction of Appearance Manifold with Embedded View-Dependent Covariance Matrix for 3D Object Recognition

چکیده
We propose the construction of an appearance manifold with embedded view-dependent covariance matrix to recognize 3D objects which are influenced by geometric distortions and quality degradation effects. The appearance manifold is used to capture the pose variability, while the covariance matrix is used to learn the distribution of samples for gaining noise-invariance. However, since the appearance of an object in the captured image is different for every different pose, the covariance matrix value is also different for every pose position. Therefore, it is important to embed view-dependent covariance matrices in the manifold of an object. We propose two models of constructing an appearance manifold with view-dependent covariance matrix, called the View-dependent Covariance matrix by training-Point Interpolation (VCPI) and View-dependent Covariance matrix by Eigenvector Interpolation (VCEI) methods. Here, the embedded view-dependent covariance matrix of the VCPI method is obtained by interpolating every training-points from one pose to other trainingpoints in a consecutive pose. Meanwhile, in the VCEI method, the embedded view-dependent covariance matrix is obtained by interpolating only the eigenvectors and eigenvalues without considering the correspondences of each training image. As it embeds the covariance matrix in manifold, our view-dependent covariance matrix methods are robust to any pose changes and are also noise invariant. Our main goal is to construct a robust and efficient manifold with embedded view-dependent covariance matrix for recognizing objects from images which are influenced with various degradation effects. key words: 3D object recognition, appearance manifold, view-dependent covariance matrix, eigenvector interpolation, eigenvalue interpolation, eigenspace

Appearance Manifold with Embedded Covariance Matrix for Robust 3D Object Recognition
We propose use of an appearance manifold with embedded covariance matrix as a technique for recognizing 3D objects from images that are influenced by geometric and quality-degraded effects. Our strategy covers the construction of this appearance manifold by giving consideration to pose changes. In the proposed method, the correspondence of each learning pose is not based on the eigenpoint but d...
متن کاملAppearance Manifold with Covariance Matrix for 3-D Object Recognition
The authors present a robust 3-D object recognition system for recognizing noisy images. Since a recognition system usually deals with objects taken from various viewpoints, their appearance will vary from one viewpoint to another. Generally, the appearance of an object changes along with the changes of image conditions, and so does its position in the eigenspace. Such changes may cause an inac...

We propose an appearance manifold with view-dependent covariance matrix for face recognition from video sequences in two learning frameworks: the supervised-learning and the incremental unsupervisedlearning. The advantages of this method are, first, the appearance manifold with view-dependent covariance matrix model is robust to pose changes and is also noise invariant, since the embedded covar...
متن کامل3D Object and Human Face Recognition using Appearance Manifold with View-dependent Covariance Matrix
This thesis addresses the problem of recognizing 3D objects and human faces from still-images and video-sequences. Here, the recognition problem is formulated as an appearance matching process. In the appearance-based approach, an object is represented in the form of two-dimensional image sets. To gain efficiency, these images are then projected into a low dimensional space in which the images ...
متن کاملChapter 3 Re - identification by Covariance Descriptors
This chapter addresses the problem of appearance matching, while employing the covariance descriptor. We tackle the extremely challenging case in which the same non-rigid object has to be matched across disjoint camera views. Covariance statistics averaged over a Riemannian manifold are fundamental for designing appearance models invariant to camera changes. We discuss different ways of extract...
